- Elected President in 2004, defeating Viktor Yanukovych despite being poisoned during the campaign.
- Contested the initially fraudulent election results and spearheaded the Orange Revolution.
- Attempted to secure a NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Ukraine, but was unsuccessful.
