- Nestor Makhno was the commander of the largest "private" army in Ukraine, which numbered around 40,000 men. Out of all the warlords, he was the most ideologically motivated, dedicating his fight to the anarchist vision. He was also the only warlord who attempted to combat anti-Semitism in his army.
- This vision appealed to the peasants he recruited, who hated state control of any kind and wanted a redistribution of land.
- While the majority of his fighters were ethnic Ukrainians and he was not foreign to the Ukrainian national agenda, his vision was basically internationalist.
- The only alliance he considered was with the Bolsheviks, but they backstabbed him after he helped them defeat the White Army.
