Mapping the responses to Ceuta
Introduction
On July 30, about 60,000 Moroccan migrants stormed the Spanish border into the Ceuta enclave 1. In the ensuing chaos, 57 people died on the Spanish side, with additional possible casualties on the Moroccan side 2. By August 1, 48,300 of the migrants had returned 3, and the Spanish government had added new barriers to entry 4.
All of that, however, is almost irrelevant to the issue I want to shed light on, namely the far-right response to this horrific tragedy. I spent a significant amount of time documenting it to show:
- (1) that the far-right response is incredibly unified. Politicians from across the European far right, media outlets, individual influencers, as well as some commentary from across the pond (including the State Department and the Vice President), all take the same stance, sometimes down to the phrasing.
- I have already made this point twice: once in a purely explanatory post and another time while analyzing the reactions to Orbán's loss.
- (2) that the response was highly sensationalist and overblown. In almost all of the following posts, you will find references to an invasion, war, or the fall of Europe. Contrary to that framing, none of these migrants even reached the European mainland.
Politicians
I have translated some of these posts using Deepl (I corrected the wording on Milan Uhrik's statement, "zvolavame" means "we're convening" not "we call on") .If you are curious about the wording in the original language and happen to speak them, you can obviously click on the link to the original post.
- Jordan Bardella (France, RN, Prime Ministerial Candidate): "On behalf of the @PatriotsEP group, I have written to @EP_President to request an urgent meeting of the European Parliament in an extraordinary plenary session to discuss the protection of our external borders, the safety of our fellow citizens and the joint measures to be taken in light of the gravity of the situation in Ceuta and Melilla. Our nations and our peoples should not have to suffer the consequences of the passive complicity of the Spanish Socialist government in the face of what amounts to a genuine, coordinated migrant invasion of European territory."
- Geert Wilders (Netherlands, leader of the opposition): ISLAMIC INVASION - CEUTA Stop them ALL. Send them ALL back. No more. No more islam. # stopislam
- Tomio Okamura (Czech Republic, President of the Chamber of Deputies, leader of the SPD party): "Yet another influx of African migrants into Europe. 🤯 I advocate zero tolerance, no right to asylum, no benefits, and harsh, uncompromising punishments. 0️⃣"
- Milan Uhrik (Slovakia, leader of the Republika party): "🔥 THIS IS A FULL-FRONTAL INVASION FROM AFRICA. WE DEMAND ACTION! WE ARE CONVENING THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT. The Spanish government has inexplicably legalized one million illegal immigrants. The result? Tens of thousands more violent Africans are already pouring in behind them. 🤯"
- Alice Weidel (Germany, AfD leader): "The Spanish exclave of Ceuta is currently being overrun: more than 1,500 migrants, mainly from Morocco and Algeria, have already entered the EU in a very short space of time. Their destination is presumably Germany. Borders must now be closed and turnbacks rigorously enforced. 2015 must not be allowed to happen again! https://www.bild.de/politik/ausland-und-internationales/ceuta-migranten-ueberrennen-spanische-hafenstadt-6a6b2befb5b26399f0be114a"
- Björn Höcke (Germany, AfD leader in Thuringia):"The Storm of the 50,000” was a systematically planned raid. Over the past few years, we have had repeated opportunities to discuss what constitutes a war of aggression in breach of international law. This is clearly a poorly disguised example of one. # Ceuta https://www.tagesspiegel.de/internationales/krise-in-ceuta-spanische-regierung-hatte-offenbar-warnungen-von-geheimdiensten-erhalten-15898668.html"
- Herbert Kickl (Austria, leader of the FPÖ party): "💥State of emergency in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta!💥 Migrants from Morocco have breached the border by sea and are currently flooding into the port city. Local authorities have even called in the military for help – chaos reigns everywhere! The message now is: Austria must become a fortress; a repeat of 2015 must be prevented at all costs!"
Influencers
- Martin Sellner (Austrian leader of the identitarian movement): "Europe is under siege. Who will defend it?"
- Naomi Seibt: "The German tax-funded media found ONE WOMAN with children for their thumbnail. This is PATHETIC. The invaders from Morocco are 99.99% fighting-age MEN who are about to rape our entire European continent."
- Eva Vlaardingerbroek (Dutch founder of the Save Europe Act): "Dear Spaniards, dear Europeans, We are being invaded. We are being governed by traitors who orchestrated this. The situation is critical. We cannot despair. Channel your energy into demanding that every single person storming Ceuta be sent back. Join @SaveEuropeAct now."
- Gerald Grosz (Austrian "Journalist"): "Ceuta was an absolute disaster. Tens of thousands are flooding across the border—and Europe is just standing by and watching. Fences? Nothing but window dressing. Defense? Nonexistent. Protection? A lie. The EU preaches control but leaves its flanks wide open. It’s all a charade. It’s all self-surrender. Remigration instead of invasion. Anything else is a betrayal of our own people."
- Tommy Robinson (UK activist):"UK MP Chris Philp went to witness the invasion of Britain firsthand this week. Watch how the invaders are aided and abetted by vile libtard French NGOs."

Substack
- Brandon Martinez: More footage of Moroccans being carried to the Spanish border in trucks from the interior of Morocco. There's no way this was "spontaneous". Thousands of young men do not live in small border towns near Ceuta. They were all shipped in from the major cities. This could only happen with the help of the Moroccan state, police and military. This is an act of WAR by the Moroccan government.
- Cemil Kerimoglu: "Europe is being invaded from different sides. In the east, Russia invades Ukraine. Western Europe, however, has also subject to invasion for a long time. In the latter case, the invaders come not with tanks, missiles and drones (for now?) but as "refugees", "immigrants seeking a better life". The method may be different, but the essence doesn't change. It must be clear to everyone with an ounce of sanity that Africans & Middle-Easterners who enter Europe (illegally OR legally) are no different from Russians entering Ukraine. Both are invaders. Both come with evil intentions of destroying the societies they enter. Both harbor a deep-seated hatred towards white people. What do Ukrainians do to Russians? Do they give them housing, do they legalize them, give them citizenship? Do Ukrainian judges intervene to decide how Russian invaders must be treated. Obviously not. That would be insane to think, right? Africans & Middle-Easterners who enter Europe must therefore be treated the same way as Ukrainians treat Russians entering their territory. Even more: the Third World countries sending those interlopers (essentially military-aged men) into the West should be treated the same way as Ukraine treats Russia."
- Centre for Migration Control: "The migrant crisis is driven by incentives. The Spanish PM gave amnesty to illegal migrants and now Ceuta has been invaded. The British PM wants Channel migrants to have the right to work, and newcomers arrivals to have immediate access to the welfare state. Huge pull factors."
US commentary
- Libs of Tiktok (Retweeted by Libor Vondráček, Czech Politician): "OMG Shocking footage shows thousands of migrants invading a town in Spain This is what our border looked like under Biden. Never forget. We cannot allow Democrats to regain power."
- Benny Johnson (US influencer): "🚨BREAKING: Leaders of 22 out of the 27 European Union countries just sent a letter European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen demanding an emergency summit over the invasion of Spain. Countries who did not sign: France, Ireland Luxembourg and Portugal."

- JD Vance:"Thank God @POTUS was elected and our country’s border no longer looks like this. These images out of Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration and the radical left-wing globalist policies that have enabled the Invasion of the West. @BillMelugin_: "Just look here, do you see any women or children? I mean most people would call these folks so-called asylum seekers. These are young guys just flooding into the country and overwhelming what if any border there is.""
- State Department:"The United States stands with the people of Spain, and all Europeans, against this egregious violation of their sovereignty and human rights. This unacceptable incident is the direct result of the Spanish Government's deliberate efforts to enable and facilitate mass illegal migration into Europe. We are considering actions to defend Americans at home and abroad from this threat and stand ready to assist other European allies considering similar options."

Analysis
There is a consistent framing across all of these posts:
There is an invasion (or something catastrophic akin to an invasion) going on. This is the result of the horrendous policies of the Spanish government and the EU, which are complicit in the disastrous consequences (crime, violence, demographic change). Every available measure must be taken because this is an existential threat. We are the ones who can prevent this catastrophe from continuing if we get the mandate to do it. Some proposed measures include a radical reform (with some wanting to abolish it completely) of the asylum system, mass deportations, and no social support for refugees.
// Again, just as a reminder, not a single one of these migrants reached the European mainland.
The politicians and activists use the words "invasion," "war," and "onslaught" very deliberately to instill an existential fear in the reader. The blame for that fear is then allocated to the Spanish government and the EU, both of which are often labelled as "left-wing." As a way to channel the ensuing anger, a magical solution—giving power to far-right parties—is offered. It's textbook political messaging, optimized to gain political power.
Almost exactly the same mechanism is used by the media covering the situation, but they rarely take the final step of explicitly offering the magical solution (to maintain some semblance of non-partisanship). Instead, that solution is left hanging in the air, perfectly prepared for politicians to take advantage of. In fact, some of these media outlets then conduct friendly interviews with politicians, giving them the opportunity to take that final step.
I included the Substack commentary to show the result of this funnel. The messages are less polished and not optimized for political gain, but they serve as a reinforcing mechanism that solidifies the image created by the professionals.
Another vector of reinforcement is the U.S. political commentary class, which props up its European allies through its reach while using their narratives to draw parallels to the situation in the United States. This also benefits the Republican Party because the Democrats become associated with a Spanish border policing failure.
